CHN: My Dear Friends & Neighbors:Please hear me out, don’t throw this away – I realize there are many papers arriving at your door daily nevertheless I ask PLEASE HEAR ME OUT? Several people in this community have caused housing to skyrocket by FLIPPING real estate!! They buy houses from long time residents and flip the homes for astronomical profits. They compete with other members of the schunah for the sole purpose of flipping for a huge profit! Years ago when a friend or neighbor was looking for a house and we knew of one we were thrilled to pass on the information. Today unfortunately there are yungelight canvassing the neighborhood for available homes so they can FLIP for profits ranging from $50,000 to $380,000. Once ‘Mr. Roberts’ becomes aware of the price his new neighbor paid he will seek the same or more.There is NO excuse for this shameful greed! This is not like selling a container of milk for a higher price. This cannot be considered “regular business practice”. If one merchant in the neighborhood sells an item for a higher price then there is always an option of going to another shop. The same is not true with housing. If a Lubavitcher wants to buy a house in his or her schunah there is no other schunah to shop in. Obviously not the same as the guy selling milk or potatoes.Therefore to excuse oneself with the warped logic that it is business like any is totally unacceptable.Some of you are reading and thinking “oye, what’s it my business” either because you already have a house or you have no intention of buying one. You are so wrong! It is your business! Yungelight are buying houses at these inflated prices because they have growing families and need a place to live. However, they can hardly make the monthly payments. Each mortgage payment becomes a huge struggle.Eventually this filters down to many of you. The one struggling cannot pay tuition for their kinderlach. The grocer, butcher, baker etc are not getting paid so they in turn cannot pay their tuition and suppliers (many of which are from this schunah also). This financial drain and strain filters into many more areas than you can imagine. Marriages are suffering and children are not getting the attention they NEED and DESERVE! THAT IS WHY YOU CANNOT SAY “WHAT’S IT MY BUSINESS”!Years ago Machne Israel wanted to buy three private houses behind 770. They offered between $200,000 and $300,000 to the owners – then a well known gevir with the best of intentions offered more money and the Rebbe did not allow it. The Rebbe did not want to start this trend of paying exorbitant prices for housing. Not because the Rebbe was overly frugal ch’v, the Rebbe was very realistic and practical. Now we have the so called Chassidim causing the very difficulties the Rebbe looked to avoid. The FLIPPING must stop and each one of you should shun those committing this selfish -disgraceful practice!Ask the flippers if they have been donating some of this BLOOD MONEY to the Mosdos that are all suffering as a result of their selfishness. Remember – the Melamdim and teachers who are with your kinderlach for many hours each day are suffering from this and their money worries detracts from their quality of teaching. If teachers get paid – their worries are eliminated and in turn this filters down and benefits the students. The flipping problem IS YOUR BUSINESS and BUYING from FLIPPERS must be STOPPED! AS: Jackie Wein of blessed memory, the wife of Rabbi Berel Wein, passed away Wednesday night in Jerusalem. The funeral procession will depart on Friday at 10am from the Hanasi Synagogue on 24 Ushishkin St. in Jerusalem's Rechavia neighborhood. She will be interred in the Mount of Olives cemetery.Mrs. Wein underwent a minor surgical procedure on Wednesday and passed away later at night. The death came as a shock to her family.Jackie Wein was born in Lithuania and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. She married Rabbi Berel Wein 51 years ago. They established their home in Chicago, moving later to Miami Beach and then to Monsey. In 1994, the Weins made aliya to Jerusalem.

EX: The yeshiva students' use of a local residence has prompted questions from borough officials. During its May 15 meeting, Borough Council members heard from Housing Officer Edward Goetzmann, who has looked into the use by Yeshiva Me'on Hatorah students of the house at 53 N. Rochdale Ave. The yeshiva is located in the borough on Homestead Lane. Goetzmann said he recently received phone calls about the use of the North Rochdale property from Mayor Beth Battel and resident Bert Ellentuck,among others. He said he has seen yeshiva students traveling up and down Rochdale Avenue and going in and out of the house. "There are more people there than there should be," he said. Goetzmann said he has notified the property owner, Paul Brottman, who is in the hospital, about the matter. "The question is, what is the building being used for?" Goetzmann asked. Phone calls to Yeshiva Me'on Hatorah Vice President Josh Pruzansky went unanswered. Goetzmann said Brottman had previously called him to say he had a new tenant who wanted to move into the home quickly. An inspection of the home only turned up a few minor problems, none of which is dangerous, according to Goetzmann. After inspecting the property, Goetzmann told Brottman he could issue a "permissible continuing occupancy" permit. He said he made it clear to Brottman and to Rabbi Yisroel Eisenberg, of the yeshiva, that the house is zoned as a single-family occupancy dwelling. He also said the rabbi is somehow related to the tenants. According to Goetzmann, there are no sprinklers in the house. But if the house is being used as a boarding home, he said, it would need to have them.......He also said the residence may have changed from a single-family home into a house where 12-14 boys sleep each night. He said the state considers a boarding home any place where five unrelated persons over the age of 2 1/2 live together.

Haaretz: Fears of a historic rift between the Chief Rabbinate and Orthodox rabbis overseas have been sparked by the Chief Rabbinate's recent decision not to recognize conversions and divorce decrees (gets) by most Orthodox rabbis abroad. The Rabbinate confirmed that rabbinic courts in Israel have been instructed not to recognize conversions and gets authorized by overseas rabbis until those rabbis pass Rabbinate exams in Israel. This means that Jews who underwent an Orthodox conversion abroad will have to convert again in Israel in order to be recognized as Jews by rabbinic courts. Jewish women who received a get overseas and wish to remarry in Israel will have to ask their ex-husbands for another get if the first one was approved by Orthodox rabbis not recognized by the Rabbinate.........Under the new policy, Diaspora rabbis must be examined by a special rabbinic court panel appointed by the Chief Rabbinate Council for their conversions and gets to be recognized. Rabbis seeking recognition for their gets are required, in addition to the exam, to attend a brief training program in which they join the deliberations at rabbinic courts and learn how to register gets. The Rabbinate will still continue to recognize conversions and gets by a group of some 50 senior Orthodox rabbis around the world. These rabbis, whose names appear on a list prepared several years ago by previous chief rabbis, will not be required to take the exams.

Yahoo: President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of the Islamic Republic of Iran' name has applied for an online MBA course in Jewish studies.......This new twist in Iran's confrontation with the Jewish State was learned on May 15th 2006, from Adam Goldberg, the CEO of http://www.about-degree.com. When contacted about this situation, Mr. Golderg said the following, "I was informed by our technical department about an unusual email regarding the President of Iran. The email was a direct inquiry about our Online Jewish Studies MBA. I thought this was a joke, and told them to delete the email. However, my CIO decided to trace the IP address. Sure enough, it was actually from Iran!". Mr. Goldberg immediately contacted the Foreign Affairs Department of the Israeli Government. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has recently made comments questioning Israel's right to exist. It is unclear whether Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will be accepted to this MBA program.........

DV: Artscroll is launching a sales campaign in Israel for all of its books through heavy advertising in the press, in botei knesses and via direct mail. The company has already distributed over 120,000 brochures in the form of newspaper inserts in the Hebrew editions of Yated Ne'eman and Hamodia as well as samples in botei knesses. The company plans to focus its marketing efforts on the Schottenstein Edition of the gemora, considered the Jewish publishing project on the largest scale (over 15 years and running), with the greatest investment (total cost of over $20 million) and the highest demand (about 20,000 copies of each volume are sold) ever. The new Compact Size Edition is a precise replica of the Full Size Edition designed to make available a more lighter, portable version to complement the home edition. The new entirely Hebrew siddur, Ner Naftoli, is also being heavily marketed. Sales have been brisk in Chutz La'aretz and now an Israeli edition has been published based on the halochos and customs practiced in Eretz Yisroel. To promote sales, 1,000 copies of the siddur have been distributed for free at selected locations around the country, including 150 at the Kosel Maarovi, 70 at Beis Knesses Itzkovitz in Bnei Brak and dozens at Beis Haknesses Hagodol. The advertising account has been handed over to Chen Advertising, which has worked with Artscroll for years. Ynet: Thirty five Jews volunteered to carry out suicide attacks against Israel in the service of an Islamic terrorist organization, claimed the head of an Iranian terrorist organization, "The Committee for the Commemoration of the Martyrs of the Global Islamic Campaign." Members of the organization said that they planned to send the terrorists to Israel via Britain. The Mahar news agency reported that the terror chief, Faruz Rajai-Far, told a Teheran conference that the organization's website registered 55,000 volunteers from all over the world to carry out suicide bombings. The volunteers, he claimed, included 35 Jews who don't live in Iran, as well as a number of Christians and other citizens. HG: A religious leader has told how a racist teenage gang attacked him like a "pack of hyenas."Rabbi Alan Shelton, 58, of Clapton Common, Upper Clapton, was punched to the ground and kicked by up to 15 yobs.They took off his religious headgear and threw it to the floor during the ferocious attack in Craven Park Road, Stamford Hill. "It happened so quickly," said rabbi Shelton. "I was walking home alone when 15 youths turned the corner and crossed over the road towards me. Harav Matisyohu Salomon Shlita was in Beachwood, Ohio speaking for the Yad Chaim Mordechai Kollel, directed by the Rosh Kollel Rav Yankel Velvel Katz, Son of the Telzer Rosh Hayeshiva Harav Mottel Katz Zt"l. The Kollel opened 10 years ago and b"h has close to 100 baalei batim learning every night. There are over 200 different baalei batim that learn there during the week. There are 16 full time avreichim headed by the Rosh Kollel, Rav Yankel Velvel Katz and the Rosh Chabura Rav Alexander Charlop. In the past years, the Kollel has brought in Rav Rueven Feinstein, Rav Malkiel Kotler, Rav Yissocher Frand, Rav Aharon Feldman and other Roshei Yeshiva, Shlita. The evening began with close to forty people making siyumim on different mesechtos that were learned during the year. Rav Matisyohu Shlita began by saying how overwhelmed he was by the atmosphere of Torah in the air and how tangible it was. He commented that he normally doesnt say his own peshotim, but he couldnt find any pshat on the significance of the eshan mikivshan, the smoke ofrom a furnace that klal yisroel witnesses by Har Sinai. He suggested that it was the Ribbomo shel oilam giving testimony that there will be Torah after the smoke of WW2. His main message was from his Rebbe, Reb Leib Gurwitz, the RY of Gateshead. The Midrash says that Hashem asked all the nations if they wanted the Torah and they all first asked: "what is in it"? Hashem answered to each of them something that was their weakest charachteristic and they had to refuse. Klal Yisroel said "Naaseh V'nishma." The Ribbono Shel Oilam was impressed and said "Mi Gila Raz zeh"? Who revealed this secret to them? Only the angels can say we will do even without knowing what it is that will be required of them. Reb Leib asked an extremely penetrating question. If klal yisroel would have asked, what is in the Torah, what would Hashem have answered us? What is our weakest charchteristic? The answer, he claimed is the Possuk "Lo Selech Rochil B'amecha." Don't be Oiver the Issur of Rechilus and Loshon Hora. Could we have claimed that we will not speak one word of loshon horah? The answer is that we had one secret. While it is true that each nation could not have kept that particular Mitzva and Klal Yisroel as well - that is with the capibilities that they had at the time. However, with the acceptance of the Torah, Hashem gave us those abilities to overcome these desires and then things which we thought were impossible will become possible and even Geshmak. The party labeled Darby's views offensive and bizarre, but it said it's too late to remove him from the ballot because absentee ballots are already being cast.The party began reviewing Darby's candidacy after he disputed the Holocaust and the death of millions of Jews. He has also associated with groups tied to racism. Darby called the Democratic Party's leadership "morally challenged" and said the party never contacted him before issuing the statement. Darby is a Montgomery attorney who founded the Atheist Law Center. He faces Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson in the primary election June sixth.

Alan Gestetner, president of Monsey-based Cole Development Corp., who has proposed building a three-story structure with 62 townhouses and a community center at North Main Street and Maple Avenue, said he plans to start demolition in the summer. "No later than August," he said yesterday. The village board, which approved the $15 million housing development as part of its overall urban renewal effort, agreed last week to transfer a former bathhouse on Maple Avenue to Cole to be demolished, The four-bedroom townhouses are expected to cost $300,000 to $350,000 each. The proposal also includes a 7,000-square-foot commercial component and feature two horseshoe-shaped buildings facing Memorial Park. The entrance would be on Lawler Boulevard. Gestetner has vowed to provide space for Little Angels Day Care Center, which operates on the site, either at the new development or elsewhere in the village. "We're definitely going to hold them to that promise," said Mercy Anim, the day care's director........

Shabbos in Monsey: Reb Shteinman Shlita arrived in monsey at approximately 4:00 pm on Friday afternoon. He immediately had a Minyan for Mincha. Kabolas Shabbos was at 8:10 followed by Maariv at 9:10. There was a "packed-house" by Maariv and everyone had a chance to wish him a Good Shabbos; and many had the chance to ask for personal brachos as well. Shabbos morning he Davened at Netz, and Shachris started at 4:40 am; again with a "packed-house". There was a Kabolas Ponim at 1:30 pm which he met with people. Mincha was at 6:00 pm and everyone was singing "Yomim" on the way from the guest house that he was staying in, to the main house. There were a group of about 15 neturei karta people, that were screaming "nachal chardei... Tzioni...". A police officer passing the area, saw a protest and stopped by and spoke with the owner of the house, and he said as long as none of the protesters enter his property, he doesn't really care.There were 4 police officers, and one of them was recording the entire incident. Nothing happened. After an hour of yelling on top of their lungs they left singing "b'derech hatorah neilech vkadash esshem shomayim". At 7:30 there was another Kabolas Ponim for people to get brachos and meet with him. At 8:30 there was a Chumash Shiur followed by Maariv at 9:30. Reb Shteinman Shlita was greeted by a crowd of a few thousand people. He then gave a Shiur in the Diningroom which was attended by all the Roshei Yeshivos Shlita and Rabbonim. After the Shiur Reb Chaim Epstein Shlita (Rosh Yeshiva Zichron Melech) wanted to speak to him. They drove to the Lakewood Firehouse where they pulled over and the two spoke for a few minutes. Mayor Meir Lichtenstein and Menashe Miller then received Brochos from him. They then left Lakewood with the Lakewood PD & NJ State Police escorting them and proceeded to Monsey where he will be spending Shabbos. On a side note: This morning while driving to Lakewood the motorcade was stopped for speeding and issued tickets! (Yes, Yanky Meyer included).

This is what transpired in Montreal: The Oilam had a chance to say Shalom and see the Gedolim from close. The Asifa for Bnei Torah in 'Yeshiva Gedolah' was very nice. The city-wide gathering in the Young Israel was short. Reb Shteinman Shlita gave a bracha- in Belz. The elderly Pupa Rov Shlita asked Reb Shteinman to speak. He spoke beautifully. They then visited the Sephardic Shul, Yavne, then back to the Airport where the Gedolim wished the local Rabbanim and leaders who were present Brochos.

Despite the attorney general’s decision, explaining there was insufficient evidence to support a criminal indictment; Mazuz has called upon Metzger to step down from his post. In his report, Mazuz stated Rabbi Metzger lied to him and to police investigators, and changed his version of events a number of times. In his capacity as head of the committee responsible for selecting rabbinical judges, Ramon will work towards ousting Metzger from his senior post.

Chaya Sura Teitelbaum, wife of the grand rabbi's son Zalmen, and three other women went to the Cemetery of the Satmars in upstate Kiryas Joel yesterday afternoon. Angry students from a nearby yeshiva, who are loyal to Aron Teitelbaum, who's been fighting with his brother, Zalmen, for control of the sect, threw rocks, State Police said. The driver called 911 and cops arrested one student, 18-year-old Joseph Weber.......

Such projects would still have to meet wetlands and other environmental rules..."This is a very important rule," said Rabbi Shmuel Lefkowitz, president of N.J. Housing and Neighborhood Development, a nonprofit seeking to build more than 400 affordable housing units in Lakewood. "There is a great need for affordable housing." "We're not affecting anybody, we're helping people," Lefkowitz said. "We help the community. It's a win-win situation. No one gets hurt here." But Tim Dillingham, executive director of the American Littoral Society, a Sandy Hook-based coastal conservation group, said the DEP, instead of trying to ensure that affordable housing projects protect the environment, is "creating loopholes and exemptions that will encourage towns to site affordable housing projects in environmentally sensitive areas.... Requirements on the amount of vegetation covering a site also would be relaxed.....Mainland municipalities had until Feb. 7, 2005, to win State Planning Commission approval of their centers and retain the higher cover limits. Yet many missed the deadline. This spring, the state temporarily re-established centers in nine coastal-area towns, including Barnegat, Brick, Dover, Lakewood and Waretown, according to an e-mail from Ehinger. Dr. Degani assessed that Orthodox habits and tastes have changed over the past few years due to the proliferation of communication devices such as televisions, computers and cellular phones....... The purchase of wine and alcoholic beverages has also gone up: Beer consumption increased 35 percent and wine consumption 25 percent. The increase is attributed to the drop in prices in recent years which have made alcoholic beverages more available to people in lower income brackets....... Car ownership has also gone up significantly. Five years ago one quarter of the religious population owned cars, compared to 32 percent this year. The demand to buy apartments among Orthodox stands at roughly 3,500 housing units per year, which is 35 percent higher than among the rest of the population...... Willingness to enter the work force has also increased....... In the past five years, the average income of Orthodox households has increase by 8 percent, which apparently explains their increasing consumerism.....

A Yeshivaworld reader emailed me that he was in Satmar this evening, and overheard a conversation taking place. This is what he heard: There were two Satmar Chasidim in The Monsey Satmar Shul talking. One of them, was Chesky Tirnuar, Rabbi Moshe Menachem Tirnuar's son. Chesky said he just saw the article from the Jpost and faxed it to his father. His father told him he never told people to organize a protest, nor did he say people should protest Rav Shteinman's visit. ALL he said during a gemara shuir was something negative about "Rav Shteinman and the Tzionim". Chesky Tirnuar also said this is Niturei Karta organizing a protest and they can't get more than 100 people to come; similar to the protest in Monsey last year that didnt have more than 50 people. It's just that Niturei Karta give stories to the media and Jpost to make a big deal about it. [He was asked if this can be made public, (Ex: Yeshivaworld) and he said he doesn't have a problem with that as long as I understand his father doesn't support rav steinman.]

Jpost: Ultra Orthodox extremists in America plan to disrupt the visit of a leading haredi spiritual leader in protest against his purportedly liberal stance on employment and army service for yeshiva students. Rabbi Yehuda Leib Steinman, who is presently visiting haredi communities across the US, Canada and South America, together with the Gerer Rebbe, Ya'acov Aryeh Alter, was expected to encounter demonstrations and vocal protests in Montreal, Canada and Monsey, New York, two enclaves of rabidly anti-Zionist, ultra Orthodox Judaism. According to haredi media reports, Rabbi Moshe Menachem Tirnuar, a rabbinic judge and Satmar Hassid in Montreal called over the weekend to organize a large demonstration against Steinman. At the last minute Steinman's entourage cancelled its trip to Montreal. Rabbi Yitzhak Levinstein, Steinman's close aide, speaking from Los Angeles, denied media reports that the reason for the cancellation was the demonstrations. "It was a choice between Lakewood and Montreal," said Levinstein. "So we chose Lakewood." He added that Steinman might still visit Montreal on Sunday. In Monsey, where Steinman is slated to stay for Shabbat, Rabbis such as Neturei Karta activist Moshe Ber Beck, who has supported and met with Palestinian terrorists and others associated with the more extreme elements of the ultra Orthodox community, are expected to organize demonstrations against Steinman. Shmuel Popenheim, editor of Ha'edah, a weekly published by the rabidly anti-Zionist Edah Haredit, said those who publicly attack Steinman deviate from mainstream rabbinic opinion. "Demonstrating in the streets and attacking a great Torah scholar is completely wrong," said Popenheim. Nevertheless, Popenheim and other haredi sources admitted that Steinman was a very controversial figure. "His strong support for the Tal Law and the Nahal Haredi [a special army unit for haredi soldiers] made him a lot of enemies," said a source in Degel Hatorah, the Lithuanian faction of United Torah Judaism. "The zealots express themselves in an unbridled way," added the source. "But their basic argument is accepted by a lot of people in the haredi community." Rabbi Steinman was severely criticized for sending his representative, Mordechai Karelitz, former Mayor of Bnei Brak, to sit on the committee that drafted the Tal Law. Steinman was also the only member of Degel Hatorah's council of Torah sages that openly supported the Nahal haredi.

A READER WRITES: 1. Rav Elyashiv Shlita, was consulted late last night, and asked if the two Gedolim should come. He said that given the potential for trouble and R' Shteinmans health, to rather cancel the trip. Although the Gerrer chassidim can come up with their own heavyweights, the Rebbe told everyone around him that this would be a tremendous Chillul Hashem. Also, the were no legal grounds for stopping the busses at the border, as they had legal permits to demonsrate. (no doubt, from the last Neturei Karta- Iranian meetings. Check out their website) 2. Many Montrealers jumped into their vans and are enroute to Toronto. To say that people are brokenhearted is an understatement. Please, do not in any way let this reflect badly on the community in Montreal. There were some major changes in the Gerrer Rebbe's plans to visit Montreal. Apparently, the Satmar community threatened to stage a protest against the Gerrer Rebbe and R' Shteinman Shlita [since they acknowledge an Israeli Government]. Satmar had 40 charter busses coming from Monroe to Montreal. They have hence decided to CANCEL their visit to Montreal. The Montreal community is stunned, shocked and broken hearted. There has been preparations ongoing for weeks to welcome these two Gedolim from Israel. In the words of a gentleman who emailed me: "as you can imagine the whole world bleeds, especially locally where kids women and fathers have built up so much excitement for this historic event. R' Shteinman Shlita and the Gerrer Rebbe arrived in Los Angeles on Sunday evening at 7:15 pm on a British Airways flight from London. They were picked up on the tarmac by private cars, arranged by and driven by Police Chaplin Chaim Kolodny (who is a Gerrer Chosid). R' Shteinman is staying at R' Yaakov Krause, Menahel of Yeshiva Toras Emes and Rov of Young Isreal of Hancock Park The Gerrer is staying at the home of Yossi Naiman. On Monday morning after the 'Neitz Minyan' R Shteinman Shlita will be Sandek at a Bris while the Gerrer Rebbe will be sandek at (Police Chaplain) Chaim Kolodny's son's bris at 10:00 am. At 12:00 pm is an asifa at Yeshiva Gedolah for all the boys from every high school in Los Angeles. At 1:00 pm at Moshe Ganz hall there is an asifa for all elementary School boys. The Gerrer Rebbe will be visiting a few people after that. Then at the Universal Hilton is a meeting with R' Shteinman Shlita and the Gerrer Rebbe with all Mechanchim and Melamdim; followed by a meeting with all Rabonim in the Greater Los Angeles area. At 7:30 pm there will be Mincha at the Hilton followed by the main Asifa. The guest speaker is Rav Osher Weiss. Following the Asifa will be Maariv. R' Shteinman Shlita and the Gerrer Rebbe have departed Israel this morning on an El Al flight bound for London. From there, they will travel to Los Angeles. On Monday evening there will be a grand reception welcoming the Gedolim of Eretz Yisroel. It will take place in the Hilton Hotel. From L.A. they will be flown by private jet to Montreal, Canada. They will be visiting many Mosdos Hatorah in Montreal. On Wednesday they will be visiting Toronto. On Thursday they will be heading back to the USA. R' Shteinman will be at the Torah Umisorah Convention on Thursday night. He will be flying by helicopter to Lakewood, and will say a shiur on Friday morning in BMG. (The time will be posted). He will be staying in monsey for shabbos.He will then make a trip to Florida and/or? Mexico to visit the Yeshivos there and return to Eretz Yisroel. The exact itinerary for the Gerrer Rebbe after leaving Toronto is unclear. There is a possibility that he will be spending Shabbos in Boro Park. After he departs the USA he might be making a stop in Belgium.

The Gerrer Rebbe was about to board the airplane on his trip to raise funds in London, Los Angeles, and New York when Eli Yishai (Shas) met him. "We must form a haredi bloc of 18 MKs – this way we can unite and work together for the good of the Torah world and we will fulfill the promises we gave the voters who elected us to the Knesset," pleaded Yishai. An official at the UTJ party said that the Admor of Gur responded with a "broad smile, and nothing else." Hasidic officials at the UTJ added that the Gerrer Rebbe gave Yishai the impression that the party is doing all the necessary calculations, and the party hasn't said the last word on the matter.

Israeli Airport Strike?

All those who are traveling to Israel this week should beware that airport union officials are threatening a strike on Tuesday, between the hours of 1pm-3pm. Such a strike would result in a cessation of baggage handling in Ben-Gurion International Airport. All incoming flights would not be serviced and departing flights would be delayed. Yeshivaworld will keep you all updated on this story.

The Navy thwarted an attempt to smuggle explosives from Egypt to the Gaza Strip today. A navy ship intercepted a suspicious boat approaching a no-sailing zone in Israel's territorial waters near the Israel-Egypt border.Fearing the boat is carrying terrorists Israeli soldiers fired warning shots, prompting sailors on the suspicious ship to throw bags full of explosives in the sea.Navy divers retreated eight bags full of explosives and landmines soon after the arrest.

Dailynews: The charred ruins of the city's biggest fire in more than a decade are being used to line the already deep pockets of the ravaged site's owner - who is literally selling the rubble off brick by brick, the Daily News has learned. Dozens of century-old, giant wooden beams and thousands of bricks from the destroyed Greenpoint Terminal Market are being carted away and sold, sources revealed yesterday. The red bricks from the warehouses' crushed walls are priced at 15 cents for lots of 10, the sources said. And magnificent roof beams - cut from durable wood that can be recycled into new flooring - are being hawked for about $1,500 each, the sources said. Even the beams that were scorched black are selling fast, the sources added. "Wood is just like toast. Scrape off the burnt part" and it's like new, a source said. The historic warehouses had been slated for demolition before the suspicious inferno erupted May 2. But preservationists fighting proposed apartment towers on the East River had been hoping to save the warehouses by getting them landmark status. The 10-alarm fire was the biggest fire in the city in more than a decade, aside from 9/11. The site's owners, Joshua Guttman and his son, Jack, have adamantly denied any role in the fire. No one has been charged. The bricks and beams began being carted away in huge trucks Wednesday when the elder Guttman, 58, made a rare appearance at the site, escorted by his son. "You and the media make me guilty," Joshua Guttman yelled at a photographer before driving away in an SUV. The Guttmans bought the warehouses for $25 million in 2001 and had agreed to sell the site for $420 million last year, but the deal eventually fell apart..... "It's disgusting, but that's business as usual for a person like Guttman," said Phil DePaolo, 45, of the community group the People's Firehouse. "Their interest is always money. That's the bottom line of a developer."

Ynet: Shimshon Badash, 58, from the town of Ramat Hasharon in the heart of Israel is in despair: For over a week now he has been suffering repeated attacks by a crow that lives near his house and is forced to leave his home wearing a helmet and equipped with a parasol in order to protect himself. "I need help. I don't have a life anymore. I live like in Hitchcock's movie 'The Birds'," the distressed Badash said Friday. Badash's nightmare began after a crow's chick fell out of its nest into his backyard last week. The young bird's loud cries forced Badash to pick it up and carry it outside his garden, a move that proved to be a big mistake. Ever since that day a crow – probably the chick's mother - began attacking Badash on a daily basis. "When I came back home on Independence Day, the crow began attacking me….. However, the town's Mayor Itzik Ruchberger eventually consented to visit Badash's house and look into the situation himself. The mayor, who confirmed he had witnessed the crow attacking Badash, said that according to the city's veterinarians "this is a common phenomenon that lasts for a week or two and then disappears. As the crow is a protected animal the veterinarians cannot hurt it, and so the only solution is to wait for the problem to resolve itself."

UPDATED 2:30 pm / 4:30 pm The APP has reported that real estate tycoon Solomon Dwek was arrested at 7 a.m. today at his Ocean Township home on charges of bank fraud. Dwek, 33, who was accused by PNC Bank of bouncing a $25 million check he wrote on April 24, was arrested by a law enforcement task force that included members of the FBI, the Monmouth and Ocean County prosecutor's offices; according to FBI special agent Steve Siegal. Dwek will appear this afternoon in U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey, Newark. --------------------------------------------------------- The APP is reporting that 10 million bond was posted this afternoon.The bond was secured by $3 million in real estate that was put up by his mother-in-law and sister-in-law, both from Union. Dwek appeared in court with his father, prominent Ocean Township Rabbi Issac Dwek, and other family members....Dwek faces up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine if he is convicted of the two charges.Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Howe had asked Magistrate Judge Mark Falk to make the $10 million bond fully secured by $10 million in cash or land, saying the potential lengthy prison term makes Dwek a "flight risk.''Michael Himmel, Dwek's attorney, said Dwek was not a flight risk because he has deep roots in the community....If there is ever a situation of someone who is not a flight risk, it is Mr. Dwek,'' Himmel told Falk.Dwek had to surrender his passport and his travel is limited to within New Jersey. ------------------------------------------------------- The federal complaint details new misrepresentations the bank says the 33-year-old real estate investor made to PNC on April 25.After he got the bank to accept a $25,212,076.35 check that would bounce even as Dwek wired most of those funds to pay off debts, and after Dwek was unable to deposit yet a second phony check for $25 million, he had a person he identified as "J.S.'' get on the phone with PNC and say the money to back up the first check would be wired.The next day, April 26, Dwek "admitted to the PNC Bank official that the individual he claimed was "J.S.'' on the telephone the previous day was not, in fact, "J.S.'', the complaint says.Dwek had used $22.2 million of the initial $25 million to pay off loans owed HSBC Bank....He later repeatedly assured PNC Bank that he was working with HSBC to return that $22.2 million to PNC.But HSBC Bank said He never asked for money to be returned. Instead he contacted the bank on April 26 "for the sole purpose of confirming that HSBC received the $20 million wire transfer from PNC Bank the previous day...

Dailynews: The real estate industry is pouring thousands into Councilman David Yassky's congressional campaign - including two controversial developers....Joshua Guttman and the Kestenbaum family are just two of the land barons who have given more than $50,000 to Yassky. After Guttman's Greenpoint Terminal Market went up in flames in a suspicious fire last week, Yassky returned a $500 contribution. Guttman has denied involvement in the fire, the city's largest since 9/11.....Guttman and the Kestenbaums also have contributed to other politicians - including Sens. Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer, City Councilman Simcha Felder, former presidential candidate Al Gore and former vice presidential candidate Jospeh Lieberman. Williamsburg preservationists also pointed to the Austin, Nichols & Co. warehouse at 184 Kent Ave., which the City Council voted not to give landmark status to in November. As representative of the district, Yassky was the force behind the nonlandmark vote. The building is owned by brothers Louis and Moshe Kestenbaum - who in 1991 pleaded guilty to a scheme to sell cosmetics and groceries intended for the former Soviet Union. Instead, the Kestenbaums and three others were convicted of illegally selling them in the U.S. for a $4 million profit. In the last two years, Yassky has gotten a total $2,100 from Louis Kestenbaum's son, Joel, and $3,000 from two Kestenbaum business associates. Yassky officials said he was unaware of the Kestenbaums' crimes........

Today the six-member UTJ party has pretty much agreed to join the coalition government in return for a bill providing for a monthly grant to large families. According to the deal, UTJ would drop demands to receive NIS 3 billion (about USD 700 million) in funds that were cut in 2003 while the government will commit to allocating a monthly grant of NIS 500 (USD 113) to families with five children or more, in addition to the Social Security grant. According to Ynet UTJ MK Moshe Gafni has said "the compromise offer is reasonable, but we have not yet examined it closely and it has not been presented to the rabbis who are supposed to decide on the matter,”. The Rabbis deciding on this matter are R' Shteinman Shlita & The Gerrer Rebbe Shlita who are leaving Israel on a 10 day trip abroad.

Haaretz: Shas is standing firmly behind party chair Eli Yishai in the face of denunciations by Rabbi Baruch Abuhatzeira, who recently called Yishai "a fraud and liar unfit and unsuitable to lead the movement." Shas expects a reconciliation meeting to take place, but the storm generated by the Netivot rabbi's remarks has revealed internal strife within the party. The comments, leaked to Israel Radio, appeared in a letter from Abuhatzeira - known as the Baba Baruch - to Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, in which he protested the failure to appoint MK Yakov Margi as a cabinet minister. Abuhatzeira claimed that this violated a promise Yishai had made to him. A Shas spokesman said the cabinet appointments were decided by the Council of Torah Sages and quoted Yosef as saying: "Injury to Yishai is injury to the Sages....... The letter revealed the dual tensions arising recently in Shas: ethnic - Moroccans versus Yemenites - and class-based, the "field operatives" versus the "appointees," representatives of various rabbinic courts and tycoons. Margi's defeat is considered a defeat for the field, and many activists are embittered by it. Margi himself told Haaretz: "I am not in the game. I thank the Baba Baruch, but I ran on my own merits and accept Rabbi Ovadia's decision with love. I support the party leader. I am his right hand man and entirely loyal to him."
